What’s your most embarrassing song currently in your playlist?
I Want It That Way, Backstreet Boys
Who is your favorite storyteller?
One of my former bosses/mentors/friends Mel Ellenwood, Executive Vice President of Josiah Venture. I sat around many a living room, conference room, board table, campfire and BBQ listening and laughing to Mel’s stories.
Most amazing encounter with someone in need?
I was serving Thanksgiving dinner at UGM-Portland when I was in college and a woman came up to me to ask if I recognized her. I looked at this woman whose hair was shaved up one side and pulled out in other places, she was dirty, track marks on her arms, eyes buggy and darting around the room. “No, I’m sorry. How do I know you?” She told me her name and my mouth wanted to drop open. This was a woman that I had grown up going to school with as a girl. This woman that stood before me with her dirty nails, messy hair and clothes was the girl that I always envied. She would come to school with glossy smooth hair, her dresses and tights were always immaculate and she never had grass stains on her pants like I often did. And here she was living a very different life than I would have expected. It was a moment that God used to humble whatever pride would tell me that I could never end up homeless on the street. How foolish that statement and belief was. We ALL are capable of making choices and could end up exactly where my former classmate was.
Why do you do what you do for i58:10 Media?
Because I absolutely delight in the privilege of giving a voice to the noble men and women, children and communities that i58:10 works with!
Describe your family?
Well let me put it this way…all 4 daughters, 3 sons-in-law, 1 niece, 5 nephews, and my parents take two vacations a year together. We love to be together, we kill it on dance floors, we would have each other’s back in a brawl, we are each other’s biggest cheerleaders, we tell each other if those pants make you look fat, we crack each other up when we play Deaf Karaoke, we bless each other.
What is a quote that has had the biggest impact on your life?
“It would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased.” C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory
